The Resource Center is a curated collection of information organized around 7 green economy “Sectors” and 7 “Topics.” In time, more Sectors will be added. Topics represent those areas in which educators and workforce development professionals continue to seek direction.

Solar

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is considered the foundation of a vibrant and sustainable green economy, and one of the most cost effective ways to lower energy consumption, reduce operating costs, and mitigate carbon emissions. more >>

Sustainability Education

Sustainability education refers generally to learning experiences that enable students to develop the knowledge, behaviors and skills to help create healthier ecosystems, social systems, and economies. For the purposes of the SEED Center, this includes resources to help build non-credit continuing education for the incumbent workforce and integrating sustainability curriculum into existing credit programs. more >>

Sustainable Ag., Food & Land

The Sustainable Ag., Food & Land sector covers the areas of organic farming, horticulture, culinary art, and landscaping. This sector includes organizations and resources that integrate environmental, social and economic factors into land use, food preparation, and land specific practices in an attempt to create a more sustainable future. more >>

General Clean Tech

The General Clean Tech sector is a space for resources that encompass multiple ‘green’ sectors. Many are applicable to the broader clean economy and sustainability-related technology and will serve the general clean tech community. Resources also provide valuable information on sectors that are experiencing substantive development in the sustainability realm, like manufacturing and smart grid. more >>

Transportation and Fuels

The Transportation & Fuels sector covers the area of electric and hybrid vehicle development and maintenance, other forms of alternative and sustainable transportation, natural gas, fuel cells, battery storage, and renewable fuels sources including ethanol, biodiesel, algae, and methane. more >>

Certifications and Industry Credentials

Certainly, one of the biggest challenges facing green educators is the rapid and mostly uncoordinated emergence of green certifications and credentials. more >>

These resources and materials have been vetted by industry and education experts, and while not in the form of specific educator tools, will assist in creating quality curricula for your classroom. more >>

Employment Industry Projections

While job training providers have been quite active in past years working with local industry to define the emerging green jobs market and potential job growth areas, most still struggle to forecast accurately regional occupational demand. The U.S. Department of Labor has made recent strides toward classifying green occupations and competencies which will help communities define and track green jobs (and colleges to design appropriate education and training programs). Given the uncertain renewable energy and efficiency industry outlook, and rapidly changing technologies, access to the most up-to-date industry studies and employment projections will be critical. more >>

The Advanced Manufacturing Office of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) works with diverse partners to develop and deploy technologies and practices that will help U.S. manufacturers succeed in global markets.

Released July 2011, this report explores the extent to which this emerging green economy can offer a pathway out of poverty for low-income young people and offers guidance to youth programs about how to learn more about and access industry-driven green credentialing and career pathways development work within local communities or regions. The paper offers a multi-step Framework that outlines strategies for connecting to career pathway efforts and delineates a three-phase model design to inform the construction of on-ramp programming.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) has tasked the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) with developing a suite of voluntary national guidelines for the work and workforce involved in residential energy efficiency retrofits. These guidelines will be built into a set of national certification and curricula within the next year.
Released in April, 2012 by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and with input from many educational and industry experts, this report can help educators cover all aspects of the job tasks related to this career position.
The WAPTAC has published a set of core competencies designed to increase awareness and raise expectations. These competencies were compiled from the course offerings of several weatherization training centers and from the technical program standards of several states.

The Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC) has free materials in energy efficiency, renewable energies, and other environmental topics. In addition to curricula and instructional materials, it includes occupational analyses and workforce analyses and trends.
This Resource Center provides curricular information on how to help energy businesses become successful in the energy efficiency arena as well as resources on career pathways, including a home performance careers self-assessment, and information on hiring and green jobs.
This page list the extensive resources of  the Greenforce Initiative, an effort to strengthen the capacity of community colleges to develop, enhance or refine green career pathway programs in six regions of the U.S. Jobs for the Future (JFF) and National Wildlife Federation (NWF) are partners in this initiative.
This site provides BPI policies and procedures which indicate the kinds of equipment and educators required for BPI-recognized training, and requirements that must be met for proctoring BPI written and field examinations for BPI certifications.
This site features detailed guides that list the requirements that candidates must specifically meet during on-site field testing for BPI certifications. The certifications include AC Heat Pump, Building Analyst, Envelope, Heating and Manufactured Housing.
This site features documents that explain the scope and requirements for two new BPI certifications: Residential Building Envelope Accessible Areas Air Leakage Control Installer, and Residential Building Envelope Whole House Air Leakage Control Crew Chief. The documents for the installer certifications include the Functions and Tasks that must be demonstrated to achieve these BPI certifications and how they can be demonstrated – for example through written or oral exams, through diagrams, props or tools, or through in-house demonstrations.
BPI is a national standards development organization for residential energy efficiency and weatherization retrofit work. BPI standards help provide quality and consistency by promoting that home performance and weatherization workforce follow the same strict protocols.
The documents on this site include analyses of the knowledge areas, subject areas, and detailed tasks that are testable for BPI professional certifications for Air Conditioning, Building Analyst, Envelope Professional and Heating Professional.
The EPA protocols and DOE guidelines are intended for voluntary adoption by weatherization assistance programs, federally funded housing programs, private sector home performance contracting organizations, and others working on residential retrofit or remodeling efforts. Together, the complementary documents will: provide a robust and practical set of resources for retrofit contractors, trainers, and program administrators; help improve the quality of the work performed in this expanding industry; promote occupant health and safety; and drive consumer demand for energy efficiency retrofit services.
