How are the Resources Organized?

What are the Criteria?

Resources that are included in the SEED Center have been reviewed by the TAG and meet the following criteria:

  • Accessible and available for colleges to model and/or customize to their local labor markets
  • Not to be used as a means to market individual consultants or their products to AACC members
  • Promote colleges becoming generally more innovative

Solar

The solar industry is expected to show steady growth over the coming decade largely due to rising energy prices, advances in technology through public/private partnerships and investments, and continued enactment of federal and state policies and financial incentives. more >>

The green building market has expanded five fold over the last three years to a $48 billion national market—and is projected to triple in the next five years. more >>

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is considered the foundation of a vibrant and sustainable green economy, and one of the most cost effective ways to lower energy consumption, reduce operating costs, and mitigate carbon emissions. more >>

Sustainability Education

Sustainability education refers generally to learning experiences that enable students to develop the knowledge, behaviors and skills to help create healthier ecosystems, social systems, and economies. For the purposes of the SEED Center, this includes resources to help build non-credit continuing education for the incumbent workforce and integrating sustainability curriculum into existing credit programs. more >>

Sustainable Ag., Food & Land

The Sustainable Ag., Food & Land sector covers the areas of organic farming, horticulture, culinary art, and landscaping. This sector includes organizations and resources that integrate environmental, social and economic factors into land use, food preparation, and land specific practices in an attempt to create a more sustainable future. more >>

General Clean Tech

The General Clean Tech sector is a space for resources that encompass multiple ‘green’ sectors. Many are applicable to the broader clean economy and sustainability-related technology and will serve the general clean tech community. Resources also provide valuable information on sectors that are experiencing substantive development in the sustainability realm, like manufacturing and smart grid. more >>

Transportation and Fuels

The Transportation & Fuels sector covers the area of electric and hybrid vehicle development and maintenance, other forms of alternative and sustainable transportation, natural gas, fuel cells, battery storage, and renewable fuels sources including ethanol, biodiesel, algae, and methane. more >>

Certifications and Industry Credentials

Certainly, one of the biggest challenges facing green educators is the rapid and mostly uncoordinated emergence of green certifications and credentials. more >>

These resources and materials have been vetted by industry and education experts, and while not in the form of specific educator tools, will assist in creating quality curricula for your classroom. more >>

Employment Industry Projections

While job training providers have been quite active in past years working with local industry to define the emerging green jobs market and potential job growth areas, most still struggle to forecast accurately regional occupational demand. The U.S. Department of Labor has made recent strides toward classifying green occupations and competencies which will help communities define and track green jobs (and colleges to design appropriate education and training programs). Given the uncertain renewable energy and efficiency industry outlook, and rapidly changing technologies, access to the most up-to-date industry studies and employment projections will be critical. more >>

This section includes lists and assessments of skill sets and competencies tied to the green economy – across the broad industry as well as within specific sectors. It also includes some critical resources that colleges can use to align programs and facilitate student transitions. Featured Resources

The 2050 Calculator allows users to create their own emissions reduction pathway, using scientific data to see the impacts. The Calculator is available in three versions to allow a range of audiences to explore how to best meet energy needs while reducing emissions: a simplified overview, a more detailed look at the issues, or a full Excel version for experts who want to look at the underpinning model.
While designed for the UK, the Energy Department there is now working with teams around the world to help them develop their own calculators, and is also building a Global Calculator to look at ways to reduce emissions worldwide.
 These climate-focused civic engagement opportunities can be built into higher education curricula through a wide variety of course topics and academic areas.

 Busting the myths about the affordability of solar energy, this real life example shows how policy can make solar energy affordable to all building owners, with utility bill savings paying for the solar. Georgia’s Solar Power Free-Market Financing Act of 2015 allows wide access to solar power as well as cost effective implementation.
 This online resource library was created by campus sustainability professionals to enable members to share and learn about sustainability in higher education. Users can utilize filter, sort and search functions to find specific information or simply browse by topic. Resources are organized by sustainability topic and include: Curriculum, Research, Campus Engagement, Transportation and Investment, plus many more. Some of the resources are also open to non-members.
 The purpose of these case studies is to showcase working financial models for universities and other higher education institutions to invest in solar energy on campus. As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, three case studies were developed to highlight higher education investment in solar energy projects.
The Clean Energy Savings for All Initiative is a cross-government partnership to bring solar power to low and moderate-income families by allowing Americans to achieve solar power with no up-front cost. The goal is a 10X increase and an expansion of the initial target set in the Climate Action Plan to install 100 MW of renewable energy on federally assisted affordable housing by 2020.

Climate Feedback is a new fact-checking tool that lets climate scientists review journalists’ articles on climate change and global warming and gives each story a credibility score. Furthermore, a browser extension is used to enable the scientists to comment on information within media stories so that anyone who installs the plug-in can see the commentary. By highlighting misinformation, a visual cue is being sent to the reader to be cognitively on guard, and thus misinformation is less likely to spread.
 These interactive, engaging and scientifically based tools help students see connections, play out scenarios, and figure out what works in addressing climate change. All free to download, a variety of materials are available including: a simulation showing impacts of energy choices on planetary health;  mock-UN climate negotiation role play simulation; online trainings in systems thinking to address climate change; and exploring how climate solutions can address other challenges, including health, resilience, and equity. 
 Learn to make sense of climate science and to respond to climate change denial with these videos from Denial101x's MOOC. This information doesn't just educate the viewer on climate science, but goes further to discuss how people think about climate change, understanding the psychology of climate science denial. Useful for both educators and students to promote open communication between people of all backgrounds and beliefs by helping people to recognize and understand how common climate myths are formed, and to provide information on how to effectively debunk climate misinformation.
This call to action is directed toward all community college and university personnel to institutionalize clean energy usage and education into every higher education department and program.  It encourages interdisciplinary curricular and co-curricular activities that will promote energy efficiency at every level.  Included in this document is a list of significant clean energy informational resources.

 This list of careers provides insight into the sustainability job market and offers information on pay scale, in addition to job descriptions.
 The AEL Tracker database contains advanced energy legislation across all 50 states. Advanced energy encompasses energy efficiency, demand response, natural gas electric generation, solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, electric vehicles, biofuels and smart grid. The database also includes other legislation that would either reduce or increase the market share for advanced energy. AEL Tracker organizes legislation into the following policy categories: Electricity Generation; Energy Efficiency; Financing; Regulatory; Natural Gas; Emissions; Transportation; Infrastructure; Economic Development; Other Energy. In total, the Tracker database provides current legislative language, recent actions, bill sponsor information, and policy trend analysis.
